“DEATH AND LIFE IN THE MODERN HOSPITAL: CAN CONTEMPORARY BIOETHICS AND TRADITIONAL JUDAISM FIND COMMON GROUND?”
RABBI DR. JUDAH GOLDBERG
Contemporary bioethics and Judaism are often described as being at odds with each other. Some of the excesses of modern bioethics, such as liberal attitudes toward euthanasia or the withdrawal of care, have further underscored the apparent incompatibility of these two different value systems. At the same time, many of the concerns of modern bioethics are in fact shared by Jewish law as well. This lecture will explore Jewish attitudes towards the challenges of end-of-life care and argue that the gap between Jewish and secular bioethics may not be as wide as is commonly assumed.
